Così dissero i Romani il Tempo che i soldati stavano di guardia la notte, divisa in quattro vigilie. I primitivi Cristiani dissero così le notti che precedevano le maggiori solennità della Chiesa, le quali si passavano dai fedeli vegliando ed orando. Cessato il primo fervore, alla veglia notturna si sotituì l'astinenza da alcuni cibi dandole impropriamente il nome di che in questo senso è tuttora in vigore nella Chiesa Romana.
